Transient Voltage Suppression (TVS) diodes, or Transil, are designed to protect electronic devices from transient overvoltage events. The P4SMA22A is a four-terminal, unidirectional bidirectional surface-mounted diode designed to protect digital and analog circuits from catastrophic overvoltage events. It is designed to protect against overload, load dump, and transients caused by lightning strikes and related sources.

The P4SMA22A is a bidirectional transient voltage suppression diode with superior performance when compared to traditional unidirectional transient voltage suppression (TVS) diodes. It is rated at a peak pulse power of 500 W, a peak pulse current of 8 A, and a breakover voltage of 23 V. Its tested clamping voltage is 16.2 V.

The TVS diode is typically connected in parallel to the protected device with the cathode toward the negative supply voltage.
