The P4SMA6.8A is a TVS (Transient Voltage Suppressor) diode, apart of the semiconductor family of devices. It is designed to protect sensitive electronics from destructive power transients, caused by lightning, inductive load switching, AC line power electrostatic discharge (ESD), and other transient overcurrent events. The P4SMA6.8A not only protects the electronic circuits, but also increases the life of the components.The P4SMA6.8A is a unidirectional diode, commonly known as "clamping diode", designed to protect components from electrostatic discharge (ESD) and transient overcurrent events. It is a subclass of the larger class of transient voltage suppressors. Its purpose is to protect both the electronic components and the power supplies from short duration, high voltage transients. The P4SMA6.8A consists of a reverse biased Zener diode sandwiched between two fast recovery symmetrical avalanche diodes. The forward conduction current is limited to 500mA, while the reverse avalanche current is in the range of 8A. The P4SMA6.8A works by using the diodes to clamp the transient voltage to a safe level. The Zener diode is used to spread the voltage across the clamped diodes, allowing the voltage to rise slowly, preventing the diodes from over-loading and allowing for safe operation.The P4SMA6.8A is used primarily in protecting sensitive electronic circuits from destructive power transients. It can be used in a variety of applications such as electrical power conversion and storage, telecommunications, consumer electronics, automotive, embedded systems design, automotive electronics, and industrial/medical applications.The P4SMA6.8A\'s working principle is quite simple. When the voltage transients fall beyond a certain level, the avalanche diodes instantly conduct current clamping the voltage to a safe level.
