Thyristors are semiconductor devices developed to control power. Within the thyristor family, P6002AD represents a special kind of device used for surge protection. P6002AD thyristors are component parts of transient voltage surge suppressors (TVS). They are designed to protect electronics and other equipment from voltage spikes, typically due to lightning strikes and equipment failure.
When voltage exceeds the breakdown voltage or PIV (peak inverse voltage) rating, P6002AD will sharply increase its current conduction. This produces an avalanche effect, a chain of electrons that accelerates in the junction. This triggers the thyristor into conduction and thus diverts the current surge away from the protected device.
P6002AD thyristors operate in two different modes to handle the current surge. The most basic one is the bidirectional mode, which consists of two thyristors connected back-to-back, one to cover negative and the other covering positive voltage potentials. The thyristors then create a bridge between the two nodes limiting the peak voltage.
A Unidirectional mode normally requires two P6002AD thyristors connected in series—one covering the positive potentials and the other to cover the negative potentials. The current will then be forced to traverse through both thyristors. This mode is recommended for safer operation because the protective voltage can be adapted in both legs of the current.
P6002AD thyristors are mainly used in power supplies, portable electronic devices, and automotive, medical, industrial and consumer electronics. They can function as voltage-protection elements, current limiters or as simple switch elements, depending on the application. These thyristors are available in miniaturized packages that allow for higher integration and lower manufacturing costs.
The most common application of P6002AD thyristors is in the protection of power supplies and electrical equipment. They protect against transient voltage spikes such as lightning strikes and equipment malfunctions, which could potentially cause damage to the device. In addition, these thyristors can also be used to limit current to lesser levels that still permit the device to operate.
All in all, P6002AD thyristors represent a reliable solution for surge protection and current control. They can be integrated into existing and new designs to protect sensitive equipment from high peak voltage. The miniaturized packages that these thyristors come in, makes them easier to install and assemble and also allow for lower manufacturing costs.
