The PCA9517A is an integrated circuit device in the family of generalized buffering and drive. Derived from the PCA9517, the PCA9517A is designed to extend the capabilities of I2C bus and other bus systems. PCs, video cards, and coprocessors use the PCA9517A in their systems for general purpose buffering and drive.The PCA9517A is designed to provide maximum versatility for every application. With extremely robust and reliable logic, the PCA9517A is capable of operating at a wide range of power supply and operating temperatures. A wide variety of input and output voltage ranges and drive options can be configured to meet the requirements of most applications.The PCA9517A is an ideal choice for buffering and drive of I2C buses and other interfaces. It has the ability to buffer and drive I2C, SPI, and SMBus interfaces, and can also buffer and isolate high-speed clock lines, as well as other digital signals. The PCA9517A has the flexibility to configure itself for multiple use, to extend the range of applications for which it can be used.The PCA9517A can be configured in 4 different functions: buffer, driver, repeater or splitter. Each of these functions has their own unique characteristics, as described in detail below.Buffer Function
The buffer operation includes both level-shifting and buffering of I/O signal lines. The buffering is provided to ensure that the I/O logic inputs and outputs remain within safe voltage levels. The level-shifting feature enables the PCA9517A to provide compatibility between logic level voltages ranging between 1.8V and 5V. The PCA9517A’s output buffers are capable of driving up to four I/O lines with current sourcing capability of up to 4mA.Driver Function
The driver function is also referred to as “single-ended output” and is used for output driving applications. The single-ended output feature of the PCA9517A enables it to provide drive strength of up to 10mA for any given output. This is in contrast to the 4mA drive strength capability of the buffer mode.Repeater Function
The repeater function enables the PCA9517A to extend the range of the I/O signals. By repeating the signals on the I/O lines, the PCA9517A is able to bridge the gap between the two ends of the I/O line and ensure that the signal remains within the set voltage levels. The repeater mode also offers current sourcing capability of up to 10mA, as opposed to 4mA in the buffer mode.Splitter Function
The splitter mode of the PCA9517A is used to divide the I/O logic line into two separate lines, each containing the same signal. This feature enables the PCA9517A to split the output signal into two identical signals, providing compatibility between multiple devices that require the same signal on different I/O lines. The splitter mode of the PCA9517A also offers current sourcing capability of up to 10mA.In addition to the versatility of the different functions of the PCA9517A, its integrated support for other protocols, such as I2C, SPI, and SMBus, provides for further flexibility.
