PEX8750-AB RDK

The PEX8750-AB RDK is a PCIe-based Network Access kit designed for FPGAs and ASICs that require DMA access to non-PCIe memory or devices. It utilizes two FPGA devices to provide an efficient interface between the two bus domains. FPGA1 is used as a bridge controller, controlling the DMA transfers between the PCIe domain and the target memory/devices. FPGA2 is used as the transactional bridge, providing the logic needed to convert PCIe traffic to an arbitrary interface which can access the target memory/devices.

The working principle of the PEX8750-AB RDK is relatively simple. The FPGA1 acts as a bridge controller and performs the data transfers between the PCIe bus and the target memory or devices. When a read/write command is initiated from the PCIe bus, FPGA1 translates the command from a PCIe format to a specific interface protocol (i.e. AXI) that can be understood by the target memory/devices. Similarly, for write operations, the data from the memory/device is translated into the PCIe format and transmitted back to the PCIe bus.

The FPGA2 is responsible for performing the PCIe mapping of the transactions. It translates the incoming PCIe transactions and maps them to the appropriate interface protocol (i.e. AXI). This is done by interpreting the PCIe transaction header, such as the transaction type, source/destination address and size. The data is then formatted properly and passed through to the target device or memory.

In addition to data transfer protocol, the PEX8750-AB RDK also provides optimization through packet-based transfers. This allows for large transactions to be broken down into smaller packets and spread across multiple clock cycles, resulting in higher throughput and reduced latency. It also allows for traffic optimization, such as transaction coalescing, which can result in faster data transfers.
