Phase Locked Loop (PLL) is a type of feedback control system that synchronizes a output frequency and input reference frequency. It is widely used in many fields including engineering, biomedical research, and signal processing. PLL combines input reference signal and internally generated signal to provide delayed or phase-shifted output. This system’s working principle is based on the concept of feedback. PLL contains several sub-components including phase detector, low-pass filter (LPF), voltage-controlled oscillator (VCO) and optional divider.In engineering, PLL is widely used for signal generation, frequency synthesis, frequency control, and phase synchronization. It performs synchronization between input source signals by keeping the triggering waveform constant in order to generate a desired output frequency that lies within the range of the available input frequencies. For instance, in radio transmitters PLL is used to generate and maintain the frequency of transmission waves.In biomedical research, PLL can be used for analyzing and controlling the electrical activity of internal organs. This system is designed to measure small differences in electrical activity of the tissue and send signals to the device’s operator or to the automatic platform. This system works by monitoring the electrical activity of the tissue and then controlling the output signal’s phase or frequency in accordance with the inputs generated from the tissue.In signal processing, PLL is widely employed in controlling the transmission of digital signals due to its low-cost and high accuracy. In order to transport data digitally, PLL’s duty is to extract a specific signal from input and send it to the destination. PLL is used to convert the output signal into a form which is consistent with the frequency of the input source and then transmit it to the destination.Physically, PLL is composed of 4 sub- components: 1. Phase Detector (PD): The Phase Detector compares the phase of the input signal with the phase of the internally generated oscillator. 2. Low Pass Filter (LPF): The Low Pass Filter passes the output of the Phase Detector and smoothens out the jagged frequency waveform to produce an averaged output. 3. Voltage Controlled Oscillator (VCO): The Voltage Controlled Oscillator is usually a type of LC-based oscillator with its frequency varying in accordance to the input control voltage. 4. Frequency Divider (optional): The Frequency Divider is needed in some application when it is needed to divide the original frequency of the oscillator to get the desired output frequency.The whole system is based on the concept of feedback. The output of the PD is passed through LPF and then when the input frequency comes to the closest of the output frequency, the control voltage of the VCO increases and the frequency further increases. So the output frequency and the reference frequency starts to lock at the same frequency.To sum up, PLL is a very useful system which is widely employed in many fields such engineering, biomedical research, and signal processing. Its working principle is based on the concept of feedback and it is composed of four sub- components which make this system work.
