A phase-locked loop (PLL) is a closed loop feedback control system that controls a voltage or frequency at a predetermined value or set point. PLLs are widely used in communications, military and industrial applications, and have continued to evolve since their introduction during the early 1960s.

The core of a PLL system consists of three main pieces: a phase detector, a low-pass filter, and a voltage-controlled oscillator (VCO). The phase detector receives two input signals, one from a reference signal and one from the VCO output signal, and determines the phase difference between them. If the phase difference between the two signals is not zero, there will be an output voltage from the phase detector. The low-pass filter is then used to filter out any high-frequency noise in the input signal so that the output of the phase detector is a steady DC signal which represents the phase difference between the input signals. This output voltage is then used to control the VCO, which matches the frequencies of the VCO output signal and the reference signal.

The working principle of a PLL system can be seen through its application fields. Perhaps the most common application field of PLLs is in the telecommunications industry. This field relies heavily on the use of PLLs to ensure that the frequency of the transmitted signal remains stable and within a predetermined range. Additionally, PLLs are used in the transmission of television signals, in digital radio broadcasting, and in fiber-optic communications.

Aside from telecommunications, PLLs are used in many other industries and applications. PLLs are also used in the navigation and GPS systems of aircraft and boats, to ensure that the location of the aircraft or boat is accurately determined even when the reference signal is blocked. Likewise, PLLs are also used to synchronize the output signal of a power generator to the power grid.

PLLs have many advantages over other control systems, such as their ability to quickly and accurately adjust to changes in the reference signal without compromising the accuracy of the output signal. These advantages have resulted in the widespread use of PLLs in a wide variety of applications, from telecommunications to navigation to the control of power grids. With advancements in the technology of PLLs, it is likely that they will continue to find increasingly important applications in many different industries.
