Working Principle

When the current is reversed, the diode works in somewhat of a weird way: instead of behaving as an open circuit, it behaves as a short circuit. This means that when the applied voltage reaches a certain level (called the VZ or Zener Voltage) the diode becomes “forward biased”, allowing the current to flow through the diode, and thus the voltage drops to a value near the Zener Voltage. This phenomenon is often referred to as the Zener effect, and it is this characteristic that makes this diode so useful.The diode, when operating in the reverse bias, is quite similar to a normal diode in its inverse bias mode, and it operates on the same basic principle: the current flow, when reversed, will be limited according to the barrier voltage of the diode’s PN junction. In the Zener diode, however, the barrier voltage is lower than in a normal diode, and the current is limited accordingly.This makes the diode very useful in applications where the voltage needs to be regulated. The particular voltage at which the diode starts to conduct current in the reverse direction is known as the Zener voltage, and this can be easily adjusted by selecting the right type of diode and changing the value of the reverse bias voltage.
