The PMMA2300KEG accelerometer works like a cantilever beam that consists of a proof mass and a lever on a base. The proof mass is the element that measures acceleration due to motion, while the lever and base are electromechanical components. When the force of acceleration is applied the proof mass moves in relation to the lever and the electrical current is generated along the cantilever beam.The acceleration is measured by the displacement of the proof mass that is applied on the accelerometer by the force of acceleration. This displacement in the proof mass is converted into electrical signal by the piezoresistive strain gauges on the lever and the base of the accelerometer. The strain gauges are mechanical transducers that convert the mechanical force into electrical resistance.
