Gas Discharge Tube Arresters (GDTs) are devices used to protect electrical systems from transient overvoltages, usually caused by lightning or switching surges. GDTs comprise a high-voltage-voltage breakdown element and a varistor (metal oxide varistor or MOV). When subjected to an overvoltage, the GDT will "break down" or fire, leaking current to ground and thereby protecting the system.
