The built-in hysteresis features improve the common-mode noise immunity by greatly reducing the afterpulse and after glow that otherwise can cause short undesired pulses when the input signal crosses an amplifier or logic threshold. While the operating voltage of the LED input side is from 4.5V to 20V, the transistor output can be up to 80V.

The application field of this optoisolator includes isolated signal translation, isolated signal level shifting, AC/DC applications, automotive applications, and communication system applications. In signal translation and shifting applications, the optoisolator can be used to couple two AC/DC signal levels, as well as drive additional inputs or to form multipolymers coupling circuits for high-side level shifting. In automotive applications, the PS2581L1-L-A is used for on-board diagnostics (OBD) systems in order to prevent a line break or extraordinary voltage levels in a vehicle’s engine management computer.

The working principle of the PS2581L1-L-A optoisolator is as follows. In the LED input side, an input signal is applied to the LED\'s anode and ground, which then causes the LED to emit infrared light in proportion to the current flow. This infrared light then modulates the current flow between collector and emitter of the optotransistor. As a result, the operation of optoisolator can be modeled by two transistor amplifiers coupled together by a light channel.
