Optical Sensors - Phototransistors is an electronic device that consist of an optical sensor, usually photodiodes cells, and one or more transistors, which is used to convert optical signal to the electrical signal. As one of the most widely used optical sensors, the PT480F phototransistor is a high performance silicon phototransistor offering both high reliability and highly flexible control with its three segment intensity control design.

The PT480F offers an optimal application field in the range of visible light up to 850nm, providing an accurate optical signal, onpiched radiation performance and high reliability. This phototransistor is a versatile solution for applications such as optical switches, optical transceivers and motion switches.

The working principle of the PT480F is based on the capacitance created when an electric field acts on an oppositely charged surface. The electric field controls the transfer of charge carriers between the oppositely charged surfaces, which are the light-sensitive photodiodes of the phototransistor and the conductive transistor. Light then acts on the photodiodes which generates an electron flow between the two parts of the transistor.

The potential of the photodiodes is determined by the type of light that is shone on it and its wavelength. When the light intensity increases, photo-generated carriers increase and the conductivity of the phototransistor rises as a result. This effect is called photoconductive gain. When the light intensity decreases, the conductivity of the phototransistor will likewise decrease.

The PT480F features a three-segment intensity control design in order to provide highly flexible control over the phototransistor. By adjusting the electrical bias of the photodiodes with respect to the transistors, the programmable range of sensitivity can be easily altered and optimized. This allows users to set the sensitivity to their application needs, making this phototransistor easy to integrate and program.

The PT480F is an ideal solution for applications such as photocells, UV sensors, motion detectors, proximity sensors, light controllers, optical switches and optical transceivers. Its high performance, reliability and adjustable control make it suitable for any environment and provide a reliable and cost effect solution.
