The working principle of the PT480F is based on the capacitance created when an electric field acts on an oppositely charged surface. Light then acts on the photodiodes which generates an electron flow between the two parts of the transistor.

The potential of the photodiodes is determined by the type of light that is shone on it and its wavelength. When the light intensity increases, photo-generated carriers increase and the conductivity of the phototransistor rises as a result. This effect is called photoconductive gain. When the light intensity decreases, the conductivity of the phototransistor will likewise decrease.
