DC-DC converters offer wide versatility and use very simple principles to switch and/or convert power from one voltage level to another. One such device is the PT4828A. This device is a non-isolated DC-DC converter that is designed to be used with a balanced input and output and is suitable for applications ranging from embedded and avionics systems to industrial control and even automotive systems.
The PT4828A works by using a buck regulator topology. This topology combines several different components together to move power from the input to the output with desirable characteristics. These components include: the input capacitor, the inductor, the switch, the output capacitor, the voltage feedback comparator and the current sense comparator. In addition to this, a diode is usually included which allows for a recirculation of the inductor’s magnetic energy.

During the ‘on’ state of the switch a flow of electrical energy passes through the inductor and charges up the output capacitor. When the switch is off, however, the inductor’s energy is discharged into the output capacitor and therefore into the load, providing a regulated output voltage. Moreover, a degree of control can be achieved by adjusting the duty cycle of the pulses. In particular, if the duty cycle is increased then the output voltage will also increase. If the duty cycle is decreased then the output voltage will also decrease.
The PT4828A is also capable of achieving higher wattage output with little effort as a synchronous mode can be enabled. This mode synchronizes the operation of the switch with the inductor current. By doing this more transistor current can be taken from the input source and consequently more power is available for the output stage. In other words, higher wattage outputs can be achieved while still maintaining the desirable characteristics of the buck regulator.
Additionally, the PT4828A also comes with a number of other features. Firstly, it has a very fast dynamic response, meaning that the output voltage can be adjusted quickly. It also has a wide voltage range, allowing both a high and low input voltage to be used. Furthermore, it has excellent accuracy and low output ripple, meaning that the output voltage can be kept very stable. Finally, it has an over-temperature protection, meaning that the device will shut down if it is in danger of overheating.
