DC-DC converters are electronic devices that convert direct current (DC) energy from one form or voltage level to another. This is done via the application of electromagnetic energy. The PT5548A is one such DC-DC converter, which offers constant voltage, constant current or constant power operation mode. It is an automotive-grade, wide input voltage range (4.5V to 40V) synchronous buck DC-DC converter. It is ideal for applications such as automotive, avionics, industrial and communications.

The PT5548A offers a continuous conduction mode (CCM) for minimum output ripple voltage. This helps to maintain lower output voltage and higher efficiency over the entire load range. The device has a wide output voltage range of 0.6V to 34V, at output current rating up to 5A. It provides over-temperature, output over-current and output over-voltage protection to ensure safe operation.
The PT5548A has a power-up sequence feature, which auto-starts the output voltage ramp-up when the device is powered on. This turns on the converter output after a delay. This delay is set by the resistor connected to the power-on pin of the device. This sequence can also be used to monitor the operating status of the device, and as a reset input for external microcontroller.
The working principle of the PT5548A converter is based on the pulse width modulation technique. The pulse width is modulated by a control loop to regulate the output voltage or output current, depending on the model. This is controlled by the error amplifier, which compares the reference voltage with the feedback voltage from the output. The error amplifier drives the gate driver, which modulates the duty cycle of the internal power MOSFET. This in turn controls the output voltage or current of the converter.
