DC-DC converters are popular devices in electronic systems as they are able to convert a DC source into a desired output voltage. The PT6304N is a DC-DC converter for high power, non-isolated step-up (buck-boost) application with efficiency of up to 94%. This device operates from a 4.5V to 75V DC input range with an output voltage up to 75V. It has a high efficiency, low insertion loss, wide temperature operation, fast transient response and a thermal shutdown protection.

Device Structure
The PT6304N consists of a power switch, a current sensing circuit and a soft-start network, and other circuits. The power switch is a N-Channel MOSFET which is designed to operate at a high frequency to reduce the inductor size. The device also includes a low-side current sense amplifier circuit for current-limit and short-circuit protection. The sense voltage is generated by an internal shunt resistor.

Control Circuit

Operation Mode
The PT6304N operates in quasi DCM (Discontinuous Conduction Mode) or CCM (Continuous Conduction Mode) depending on the loaded current. In DCM, the inductor current reduces to zero at the end of each switching cycle and the diode is in off state at that time. Whereas in CCM, the oscillator output is set to logic high until the inductor current reduces to the value of current limit setting. This allows the diode to remain continuously in conduction and the inductor not to discharge the energy. The operating frequency of this device is set at 200 KHz.

Protection Circuit
The PT6304N includes several protection circuits to ensure the safe operation of the system. These protection circuits include current limit, over-temperature shutdown, input under-voltage lockout and over-voltage protection. The current limit of this device is set such that it allows a Peak Current limit of 1A, a Saturation Level of 0.8A and an over-voltage protection of 10V. In addition to these, the device also has an under-voltage lockout at 4.5V input. The over-temperature protection is provided through a thermal sensor which shuts down the device at a certain temperature.

Applications
The PT6304N converter is suitable for high-power, non-isolated step-up (buck-boost) applications. It is suitable for applications such as LED drivers, telecom infrastructure, industrial and automotive applications. It can also be used in motor control system, power supplies for isolated DC output, battery powered systems, portable electronics and other power applications.
