DC DC Converters: PT6313C Application Field and Working Principle

DC-DC converters, also known as switching regulators, are essentially power supply systems, and being able to convert an input voltage to a higher or lower voltage. There are a large number of different DC-DC converter types, offering distinct performance and characteristics, and one of such converters is the PT6313C step-down DC-DC converter.

Overview of PT6313C

The PT6313C is a 150kHz fixed frequency synchronous buck PWM (Pulse Width Modulation) DC-DC converter. It is a well-regarded DC-DC converter due to its high efficiency levels, high precision, high density, low ripple noise, easy system design, and fast response rate, among many other distinct advantages. It also has a wide operating temperature range, easy to use adjustable operating frequencies, and soft start capability.

Working Principle of PT6313C

The working principle of the PT6313C is based on its self-balancing voltage-mode pulse width modulation (VM-PWM). By employing this technology, it helps to control the output voltage of the DC-DC converter. To better understand how this converter works, it is important to illustrate its two main components, the constant frequency oscillator/comparator (CFO/Cmp) and the pulse width modulated output stage (PWMO). The CFO/Cmp configuration consists of a voltage reference, comparator, and a high-frequency oscillator. The comparator compares the signal of the reference voltage and the feedback of the output voltage. If the output voltage is lower than the reference, it then outputs high voltage and when it is higher, it generates a low voltage. The frequency of this output voltage is determined by the oscillator set in the CFO/Cmp, and in the case of the PT6313C, it is fixed at 150kHz. Meanwhile, the PWMO is used for controlling the output current and voltage. It is consists of a main switch and a linear regulator. When enabled, the main switch, MOSFET, is subjected to the PWM signal produced by the CFO/Cmp, controlling the ON/OFF duration of the MOSFET. When the switch is on, current flows from the input voltage source, reducing the power delivered therefrom and providing power for the output load.In summation, the self-balancing VM-PWM technology adopted by the PT6313C DC-DC voltage regulator ensures the accurate control of the output voltage and current of the power supply system, reducing overall noise and oscillation. By leveraging the synchronous PWM control and the low dropout linear regulator, it effectively optimizes the overall efficiency while reduces the output ripple.
