DC/DC converters are used to convert a DC voltage with one value of electric potential into a DC voltage with a different value of electric potential. Specifically, PT7715N is a kind of DC/DC converter designed for charging applications. Its main features are wide input voltage range, low power dissipation, good output voltage accuracy, over current protection, short circuit protection, thermal shutdown protection and high efficiency. With these features, it is suitable for mobile equipments, like digital products, mobile phones and notebooks.PT7715N consists of an input voltage regulator, which can average and stabilize the input voltage in the range of 2.5-25 V, a bidirectional power regulating switch, and an output voltage regulator. The input voltage regulator is used for the average and stabilization of the input voltage, and it is passed on to the bidirectional power regulating switch. The bidirectional power regulating switch compares the feedback voltage with the reference voltage, and it then adjusts the duty cycle accordingly. The output voltage regulator then filters the voltage and regulates it to the required value, which is passed on to the output.PT7715N has two kinds of working modes: Step Up and Step Down. In the Step Up mode, the input voltage is called the source voltage and the output voltage is called the load voltage. When the load voltage is larger than the source voltage, for example, in a 5V-20V application, the PT7715N can convert the 5V source voltage to the appropriate 20V load voltage without any external components. This is convenient for system designers who need to step up the output voltage without the need for large inductors or bulky transformer.In the Step Down mode, the PT7715N can convert the 20V source voltage to the appropriate 5V load voltage with external components. When the load voltage is smaller than the source voltage, external components such as inductors, transformers, diodes and capacitors are needed in order to step down the output voltage. These components are necessary to reduce the voltage to lower levels. Furthermore, they help stabilize the output voltage and filter out any potential noise or ripple. PT7715N is designed with a high efficiency power MOSFET and applies advanced power regulation techniques to provide high efficiency and good power performance. It has an excellent temperature characteristic, which is helpful for the long-term operating stability under varying temperatures.
