Film capacitors are an important type of capacitor amongst other component elements due to their wide range of applications, relatively low prices, and their reliable and robust nature. Such capacitors can come in various forms, shapes, sizes and voltage ratings which can help to determine their various functions and specific applications. The PVC16222, a film capacitor specifically, is a polyester film capacitor, an illustrious type of capacitor that features a great range of uses while being useful for a number of industries, including automotive and aviation sectors. It is capable of withstanding an operating temperature of between -30 and + 135°C with a 1.40 ± 0.03 mm thick polyethylene-naphthalate layer coupled with material soaking that further strengthens the capacitor for humid or other hazardous environments. It is available in a broad range of capacitance ratings, such as 0.33 to 0.68 μF as well as its corresponding 1.8.5mm diameters.The PVC16222 in particular is typically used in power supplies where a capacitance value of 0.01 to 0.2 μF at 160 VAC is required as it is able to offer excellent reliability, high performance, and a low level of leakage current. It is also commonly used in pulse sources for optical communication and switching power supplies. This is because the film capacitor is able to store high-frequency electrical energy, providing efficient switch operation and high-performance metering.

The working principle behind the PVC16222 is similar to most any other capacitor. This particular film capacitor is made up of two metal plates, one of which is called the anode (positive), and the other the cathode (negative). The two plates are separated by a thin layer of insulating material -- such as film or mica -- and the plates together form an electrostatic capacitor. When AC is applied to the anode, charges are stored by the capacitor on the anode side, while the cathode side of the capacitor acts as a ground or neutral. As a result of being attached to a source of alternating current, this causes a current to flow back and forth through the capacitor and, as such, an amount of energy is effectively stored.

Due to the design of the film capacitor, it also operates with considerable frequency characteristics, meaning that it can be used to filter out high frequencies from a signal. This is achieved by using the electric flow through the capacitor to remove areas of high frequency from the signal while maintaining a low frequency output. Such capabilities affects the way devices process signals and signals are filtered
