Thyristors - TRIACs

TRIACs are a subset of thyristors and are mainly used in AC switching applications. The Q2025R5 is a fast-switching, high voltage bidirectional AC switch with a maximum current rating and a breakdown voltage of 600V. These switches feature a low turn-on current, fast turn-off operation, and a high threshold switch temperature. The TRIAC is one of the most common switching devices available because of its ease of use and high reliability. This three-terminal device is connected to an AC power source, allowing it to control current flow in both directions. To do this, the TRIAC first needs to be triggered by applying a voltage to the gate terminal. This is done by connecting a voltage source or an external control circuit to the gate terminal. The other two terminals are then connected to the AC power source and the load. When the device is activated by the gate signal, the TRIAC switches the AC current from the power source to the load, controlling the amount of current that flows through the load.Working principle of the Q2025R5 is relatively simple. The device consists of four layers of alternating p-type and n-type material. When the voltage applied to the gate terminal is more than the breakdown voltage (600V), the gate terminal provides sufficient gate current to make the TRIAC conduct. As a result, the n-type and p-type material will form a “bridge” across the device and current will flow through the load. The TRIAC will then remain in its conducting state unless the gate voltage drops below the threshold voltage set by the TRIAC.The TRIAC can also be used to control the voltage applied to the load. When the TRIAC is in its “on” state, it passes the full power of the AC signal through the load. However, if the TRIAC is in its “off” state, the supply voltage will be significantly reduced. This is because the TRIAC acts as a resistor and reduces the voltage across the load.The Q2025R5 is ideally suited for applications such as motor speed control, lighting control, HVAC control, and electronic appliance control. It can also be used for AC power switching, power factor correction, power distribution, and power regulation applications.In summary, the Q2025R5 is a versatile, high voltage AC switch with a high current rating and high switching speed.
