The REG101UA-3 Voltage Regulator is a three terminal fixed output voltage regulator, requiring a minimum amount of external components. Its internal circuitry features include an adjustable output range from 1.2V up to the 5V or 15V rated output, short circuit current limiting and thermal shutdown for full protection. This voltage regulator also incorporates low temperature coefficient and excellent line/load regulation for improved system accuracy and stability. Its output voltage accuracy typically does not exceed ±2%.

The REG101UA-3 is ideal for a wide range of applications ranging from process control, computer systems, and communications, to instrumentation and battery operations. In particular, it has a very low dropout voltage, which allows it to operate even at extremely low voltage supply levels. The device is also designed to handle very high ripple currents and operates at frequencies up to 180kHz.

The REG101UA-3 achieves its output voltage regulation through the Working Principle of Linear Regulators. Linear Regulators are closed-loop control systems which compare the output voltage of the voltage regulator with a reference voltage and adjusts the output voltage in order to obtain the desired output voltage. The regulator circuit usually consists of an error amplifier, feedback elements and transistor or MOSFET pass element. The error amplifier adjusts the voltage level of the transistor pass elements. This allows the transistor to regulate the output voltage correctly.

Consider for example, the REG101UA-3 linear voltage regulator. A power supply with an output voltage other than the desired voltage is applied to the input stage.
