Diodes - Rectifiers - Single
A reverse super-forward lookahead guard logic hybrid rectifier operating in the voltage-mode (RSFGLHRVG) is a kind of switching power supply rectifier that has been used in AC-DC converters since the late 1980s. The RSFGLHRVG utilizes a couple of transistors, operating in an inverse of one another, to allow the power supply to reach much higher voltage ratings (up to 3,000 volts) than traditional rectifiers. The RSFGLHRVG works by steering current flow from the AC power line, through the rectifier, and into the power supply.
The rectifier portion of the RSFGLHRVG is composed of a pair of MOSFET transistors and capacitors. The transistors are connected in an inverse fashion and act as switches for each half-cycle of the AC power line. During the positive half-cycle of AC power, current flows from the AC wire through one of the transistors and then through a diode to the power supply. The diode halts current from flowing back to the AC line, while allowing current to enter the power supply through the other transistor during the negative half-cycle.
The forward and reverse look-ahead guard logic portion of the RSFGLHRVG is composed of shutdown and current limitations logic, which can be preset and customized to meet the required specifications of the power supply system. This look ahead guard logic helps shut down the circuit if either of the two transistors reaches its predetermined current levels. The logic has two parts – the forward logic, which ensures the switch is closed if a predetermined current level is met; and the reverse logic, which ensures the switch is opened if the predetermined current level is exceeded.
The hybrid part of the RSFGLHRVG is the combination of the transistor switches and the shutdown and current limitation logic. This hybrid allows for higher voltage operation with greater control. The hybrid part also helps with temperature control as the voltage is spread out among the multiple elements. The temperature is also monitored with temperature monitoring probes.
The RSFGLHRVG application field is relatively wide, being present in areas of consumer electronics, solar inverters, power supplies, LED lighting, and renewable energy. The technology is also being tested in integrated circuits, such as hybrid rectifiers, AC-DC converters, and the like.
