Working Principle

The working principle of RT8241AZQW is based on the pulse-width modulation (PWM) control method. In short, it uses the average voltage of input voltage and output voltage to calculate the on-time of the switch. When input voltage is lower than output voltage, RT8241AZQW acts like a switch for current to flow from input power to output power; when input voltage is higher than output voltage, RT8241AZQW acts like a resistor for current to flow from output power to input power.

At the moment when the switch starts to turn-on, the output voltage control input (VCTL pin) and power switch output (PWM pin) of RT8241AZQW both go high. This will enable the switch, which is followed by power conversion taking place and output voltage rising, when the output voltage reaches the set value, the VCTL pin will be pulled low, disabling the switch and preventing the output voltage from exceeding the set value.

At the moment when the switch starts to turn-off, the PWM pin will be pulled low. This will break the path that connects the input power and output power. Since by principle, no current can flow from output power to input power, RT8241AZQW will act like a resistor to give current a discharge path. The time that it takes to discharge the current is determined by the external resistor and capacity.

RT8241AZQW also provides multiple protection functions, like current limiting protection, lightning protection and thermal protection. Current limiting protection monitors the current on PWM pin and limits the total current to a certain value. Lightning protection monitors the input voltage and limits the reset time to a certain value; this prevents the power adapter form getting damaged by lightning. Thermal protection monitors the temperature of the IC and cuts the power when the temperature reaches to a certain value. All these protection functions help make the use of RT8241AZQW safer and more reliable.
