Working Principle
This linear voltage regulator works according to an error amplifier control method. It detects the output voltage and compares it with the reference voltage and generates an error signal. This error signal is amplified and applied to a series pass transistor which controls the output voltage. This pass transistor is a bipolar junction transistor (BJT). When the output voltage is too high the error signal will cause the BJT to reduce the current in the output voltage source, thus causing the output voltage to decrease. Likewise, when the output voltage is too low the error signal will cause the BJT to increase the current in the output voltage source, thus causing the output voltage to increase.
In order to protect the device from over-currents, the RT9053AZQW uses an over-current protection circuit. This over-current protection circuit has two components; an over-current detect circuit and a latch circuit. The over-current detect circuit monitors the output current and generates a signal when the current exceeds the set threshold. This signal is then latched by the latch circuit and the output voltage is set to its minimum value.
The RT9053AZQW also has an integrated over-temperature protection (OTP) circuit for when the output temperature rises above the set threshold. The OTP circuitry shuts down the device when the temperature crosses the threshold and requires manual reset before normal operation can resume.
