?The RT9058-33GX is a advanced Linear Voltage Regulator (LVR) from Richtek. It features an adjustable output voltage from 1.5V to an absolute maximum of 33V and a rated output current of 3A. The device is in a TSOT 7-pin package and incorporated with an available EN/SET adjustment for voltage regulation function and thermal shutdown function for protection.
The application field is wide and includes LDOs, DC/DC converters, automotive monitoring system, PoE (Power over Ethernet) devices and any circuit that requires adjustable output voltage.
The RT9058-33GX is designed to deliver a precisely regulated output voltage over a wide input voltage range of 4.7V to 36V with high current output and superior line/load regulation under extreme temperature conditions. The device contains an high accuracy voltage reference, a error amp, a driver and an output MOSFET which is similar to standard linear regulator.
The operation and working principle is simple. The typical circuit consisting of the RT9058-33GX shows the following components: an input capacitor Ci, an output capacitor Co and an enable capacitor Ce which is not necessary, but recommended for external stability margin. The rest is depending on the various design requirements.
At the beginning, the enable capacitor will be charged after the input voltage reaches the minimal levels and current limit and the over temperature protection works. The enable capacitor drives the oscillator of the error amplifier (EA) to enable and the EA begins to operate. The EA compares the voltage between reference voltage Vref and the voltage at the feedback pin FB with the median voltage Vmid to decide whether the output voltage should be increased (Vout > Vmid) or decreased (Vout < Vmid). The current is then adjusted based on the voltage difference until the voltage value between FB and Vref reaches the target level.
The compensation resistor is utilized to stabilize the feedback loop and optimize the transient response. The oscillator frequency is determined by the external resistance on the RT pin and the internal current. The combination of the varying resistance and the internal current can provide a wide range of switching frequencies from 500KHz to 2MHz.
The RT9058-33GX can provide fast line/load transient response with a 50mV maximum deviation voltage. The over temperature shutdown (TSD) protection circuit keeps the output within a safe range and can be activated by adding an external NTC/PTC thermistor. The device also supports two level soft-start to improve the dynamic performance.
The RT9058-33GX linear regulator is a good choice for applications with adjustable voltage, high current output and low dropout. It has a wide range of applications and can achieve good output performance with small external components. With the thermal shutdown protection, it can be effectively protected from over temperature condition and meet the requirements of harsh environment applications.
