Working Principles

The RUSB155 utilizes a Piezoresistive Polymeric Positive Temperature Coefficient (PPTC) element as its active element. When the current exceeds the fuse’s preset limit, the PPTC element mechanically and electrically shuts off the circuit, successfully protecting the downstream components.

The PPTC element functions by using two conductive polymer layers which are filled with a passivating agent. One of the layers contains semiconductor particles. When the current exceeds the predetermined limit, the particles interact and create a resistance to further current flow. This results in a sufficiently high temperature that causes a change in the chemical composition of the passivating agent, which permanently interrupts the current.

The reset of the fuse is accomplished by the drop in temperature and the additional decrease in the resistance of the PPTC element. The fuse remains in the opened state until the current reaches safe levels. At this point, the fuse is re-energized and ready to protect the downstream circuits again.
