Working Principle

The RUSBF090-2 is a multi-layer Polymeric Positive Temperature Coefficient (PPTC) fuse made up of a resistance element and a temperature sensitive polymer. The resistance element is composed of trace metal particles that are suspended in a resin matrix. The metal particles increase resistance as more current is supplied, limiting the current flow when the device heats up. When the current reaches a certain limit, the temperature of the metal particles causes the polymer to expand and increase the resistance, cutting off the current. When the current is reduced to a safe level, the polymer slowly reset to its original shape, thus allowing the current to flow and the device to be reset.

The RUSBF090-2 has an operating current of 90mA and a resettable voltage of 4V. It also has a power dissipation of 1.4W and an operating temperature range of -40°C to +85°C. The device is rated for a maximum hold current of 2000mA and a maximum nominal dissipation of 10W.
