The operation of a single diode bridge rectifier consists of four semiconductor diodes connected to form a bridge. The diodes are connected in a way such that installing a single diode between each pair of points allows passing of both AC half cycles. This bridge is used to convert alternating current into direct current. In a single diode bridge rectifier, when the input AC voltage is applied, each diode will conduct on alternate half cycles. In the first half cycle of the AC input, diodes D1 and D3 will be in forward bias and hence will conduct. The current flows through the external load RL and returns to the AC source through the diodes D2 and D4. Similarly, during the second half cycle of the AC input, the diodes D2 and D4 will conduct, and the current will flow through the load RL and returns to the AC source through the diodes D1 and D3. Thus, in both cycles, the current from AC source is passed through the external load RL and both the waveforms of the output voltage will be in the same direction. The input AC voltage waveform appears inverted of the output voltage waveform, as it is shifted by 180°. The current waveform has the same shape and is shifted by 90°. The diodes in a single diode bridge rectifier allow only the one-way flow of current, resulting in a unidirectional output voltage.Conclusion
