Thyristors - SCRs
A Silicon Controlled Rectifier (SCR) is a four-layered solid-state current-controlling device. The letter S in SCR stands for Silicon. SCRs are also known as thyristors. Its name is derived from the combination of the words "Thyratron" and "transistor." SCRs are also known as voltage-controlled rectifiers because they can be turned on via current or voltage.

Working Principle
An SCR consists of four layers of semiconductor material: an anode, a cathode, a gate, and a body. The anode and the cathode are the two main terminals of the SCR. In order to turn off the SCR, the gate terminal must be brought to a negative voltage with respect to the cathode.
The gate terminal is used to control the current flow through the SCR in a two step process. First, when a small current is applied to the gate, a small voltage is generated across the gate and cathode terminals. This voltage is known as the "gate trigger voltage" and it is necessary for the SCR to start conduction.
Once the gate trigger voltage is reached, the SCR enters the second stage of conduction. This second stage is known as the "saturation region" because the SCR is fully conducting. In this stage, the current flow through the SCR is limited to the on-state current rating of the device. The SCR can be switched off only by reducing the current to a value lower than the on-state current rating and then applying a negative voltage to the gate.
