Thyristors are solid-state switches that, upon commanded firing, can provide a conduction path between two terminals. This type of semiconductor switching device can be used to control high power AC or DC circuits, or to block or regulate the flow of current. The S2008F12 is a type of thyristor known as a silicon-controlled rectifier (SCR).

The S2008F12 silicon-controlled rectifier (SCR) is an electronic component that functions as a combination power switch and regulator. It contains a three-layer gate, built from a PNPN structure which enables the gate to be an open switch, closed switch, or a combination of both, depending on the external biasing. In a typical application, the S2008F12 functions as a switch to turn power on and off. When the gate voltage is removed, the device will remain in the “on” state, providing a path for current flow until the current drops below the device\'s holding current.
