The S2008L thyristor, manufactured by Semikron, is a three-terminal device with two leads (anodes) connected together internally. It belongs to a family of thyristors, i.e. Silicon Controlled Rectifiers (SCRs).
An SCR is a three-terminal semiconductor device, commonly referred to as a thyristor. It is used as a switch in electronic circuits, typically to control a high current or voltage load. The device is composed of four layers of semiconductors (p-type and n-type material). By applying a suitable gate voltage, the junction between these layers can be made conductive, allowing current to flow through the entire device.
In an S2008L device, the three terminals are the anode, cathode and gate. The anode and cathode are connected internally and externally to the respective circuit components. The gate is connected to a logic input and is used to turn the device on and off. A positive voltage applied between the gate and cathode will turn the device on and a negative voltage will turn it off.

When the junction is forward biased, a small electric current flows through the semiconductor layers and turns on the thyristor.
The device is then turned off when the gate voltage is reversed. This reverses the current flow, allowing the junction to become non-conductive. Thus, the device can be used to switch on and off high currents and voltage loads.
