Thyristors are a variant of transistors comprising three or four layers of semiconductor sandwiched between two electrodes. Thryistors have been in use for a long time and can be used to switch or modulate an electric current. It is the SCRs or Silicon Controlled Rectifiers, which are mainly used due to their efficient switching, high current capability and energy efficiency.
SCRs consist of four layers of semiconductor material, two of which are "P-type" and two of which are "N-type". These layers are arranged between two metal contacts called the Anode and the Cathode. When the Anode is connected to a positive voltage and the Cathode to the negative voltage, then a voltage is applied to the Gate of the SCR. The Gate of the SCR is the third electrode between the Anode and the Cathode. When the Gate is activated a small electric current passes through and allows larger current to flow from the Anode to the Cathode. This process is known as triggering or turning on the SCR.
The S2010V is a type of SCR and it is most commonly used for AC voltage and current control, motor speed control, surge current control and other similar applications.
