The S2012R is a sensitive SCR, belonging to the Thyristors family of components. A sensitive SCR is a three-terminal semiconductor device composed of two PN-junction elements, positively activated by a single gate circuit. It is especially designed to be used in sensitive current and temperature control circuits. The device, which can be triggered with a signal of a few milliamperes to a few amperes at an applied voltage of tens of volts, is a four-layer, normally nonconducting device.
The S2012R has an isolated gate, negative control type gate circuit which acts as a potential divider to reduce the gate current, allowing more precise current control as well as ensuring longer life by protecting the gate from excessive gate current. It is designed for low level trigger current and easy operation. The device features a wide operating voltage range from 0 to 60V, suitable for both ac and dc applications. The S2012R also has a wide operating temperature range from -55˚C to 125˚C, making it suitable for both industrial and commercial applications.
The working principle of S2012R is based on a p-type semiconductor sandwiched between two n-type semiconductors. When anode voltage is applied and forward biased, current starts to flow through the device. When a small forward bias voltage is applied to the gate, it increases the current flow through the device and it becomes forward biased. As the current through the device increases, it reaches the holding current value and the device remains in the on state until the anode current is reduced below the holding current. As soon as the current is reduced, the device becomes poise and can be reset by removing the forward bias.
The S2012R is mostly used for controlling current in light dimmers, motor speed control, phase control and industrial process control, as well as for over-current and over-temperature protection circuits, since it can precisely control the current flow in these applications with its sensitive gate. Other applications include DC-DC converters, AC and DC motor speed control, switching-mode power supplies, temperature and pressure Sensors, and other general power circuits.
The S2012R is an ideal choice for the construction of sensitive current and temperature control circuits. Its low trigger current and wide operating voltage range allows it to be used in both industrial and commercial application. Its reliable performance and negligible switching losses make it a profitable solution to many industrial and power control problems.
