A silicon controlled rectifier (SCR) is a four-layer, three-terminal semiconductor device with basic functions of a thyristor. It turns on by applying a gate current to the gate terminal and turns off when the current is removed. The gate controls the firing angle of the device. The S4010VS2 is a common SCR used in many industrial applications.
S4010VS2 Application Field and Working Principle
The S4010VS2 is used in various applications ranging from power control and regulation, switching contactors, and even meter services. Its applications include industrial, commercial and residential. Its maximum blocking voltage (Vmax) is 400V with a maximum current (Imax) of 10A. Its on-state voltage drop (Vf) is typically 2V, making it an effective switch for controlling and regulating power.
The S4010VS2 works by having three main terminals which are the anode, cathode and gate. The anode and the cathode are the two outer terminals with the gate being the center terminal. When a positive voltage is applied to the upper anode terminal, it causes current to flow through the device. This, in turn, creates a magnetic field which attracts electrons from the cathode terminal. Consequently, the current through the device is increased, along with the voltage across the device. The increase in current and voltage causes the device to turn on, allowing current to flow through the anode-cathode circuit.
The SCR is turned off by the gate terminal. To turn off the device, a negative voltage is applied to the gate terminal. This reduces the magnetic field created by the anode-cathode current, and the electrons are repelled away from the gate terminal. This reverses the anode-cathode current and the device is turned off.
In addition to simple switching applications, the S4010VS2 can also be used for phase phasecontrol and dimming applications. In phase control, the gate current is varied to control the firing angle or “on” time of the device. This allows the user to program the on-time and the off-time of the device, which can be used to control the speed of a motor or the brightness of a dimmable light. For example, in a motor application, by increasing the “on” time of the SCR, the motor speed will increase.
The S4010VS2 SCR is a versatile device with a wide range of applications. It can be used for simple on/off switching applications all the way to phase control and dimming applications.
