This reduces the magnetic field created by the anode-cathode current, and the electrons are repelled away from the gate terminal. This reverses the anode-cathode current and the device is turned off.

In phase control, the gate current is varied to control the firing angle or “on” time of the device. This allows the user to program the on-time and the off-time of the device, which can be used to control the speed of a motor or the brightness of a dimmable light. For example, in a motor application, by increasing the “on” time of the SCR, the motor speed will increase.
