Thyristors are solid state semiconductor devices that act as switches. A semiconductor device or electron device is a device that exploits the electronic properties of semiconductor materials, primarily silicon, germanium and gallium arsenide, for its operation. Thyristors are usually classified into four main types: SCRs, TRIACs, Diacs and Thyristor Autocouplers. The most commonly used type of thyristor is the SCR (Silicon Controlled Rectifier).

The SCR is a three terminal, three layer device, with one anode and one cathode terminal, and a Control Gate terminal. In SCRs, the dopant atoms are arranged in either a P-N-P or N-P-N structure. The P-N-P structure is most common; the N-P-N structure is known as a Reverse Conducting SCR (RC-SCR). The SCR is normally Conducting Off, and requires a positive voltage applied to the Gate terminal to turn it on. The device will stay ON until the Gate voltage is removed, or the anode current drops below the holding current.

The S4012V is a three-terminal, three-layer silicon-controlled rectifier (SCR), and is used to control AC or DC power in smaller applications such as computer systems, motor control, lighting and audio systems. It is available in TO-220 package, with a maximum current rating of 4A and a maximum forward voltage of 400V. The device has an operating temperature range of -40°C to 125°C, and features integrated protection from over-voltage, over-temperature, and excessive gate current.

The S4012V, as with all SCRs, operates on the principle of two different conduction states. When no gate current is present, the SCR is in the off-state, with a blocking voltage applied between the anode and the cathode. When a current is applied to the gate terminal, the SCR turns on and allows the current to flow between the cathode and the anode.

The S4012V is capable of controlling medium-power AC or DC power in a range of applications, including motor control, lighting and audio systems. When used to control AC power, the S4012V can be used to switch individual phases of a three-phase system, allowing for more precise control over the AC power with less wear and tear on the electrical components of the system.
