Thyristors - SCRs
A Thyristor is a solid state semiconductor device that uses a triggered electric current across its electrodes to control a large current flow. Thyristors are also known as SCRs (silicon-controlled rectifiers). The S8010L are a type of Thyristor made with silicon, so they are sometimes referred to as SCRs (silicon-controlled rectifiers).
S8010L Application Field
The S8010L are commonly used in applications that require power control, such as motor control, high-voltage industrial AC control, computing and communication, inverters, and DC-DC converters. They are also used in battery chargers and solar cell applications, as well as resistive and inductive loads. The S8010L are preferred because of their excellent performance, long life, low conduction losses, and low gate current requirements.
S8010L Working Principle
The S8010L working principle is quite simple. When the gate voltage exceeds the Breakover or "holding" voltage, the device turns on and carries the load current. When the gate voltage is removed, the device will remain on until the load current falls below the holding current. The S8010L can control the current at either polarity of DC input voltage, and provide zero-crossing control of AC input voltage.
When the S8010L thyristor is activated, it becomes a "gate" to control the current. The gate is normally in an open state, with no current flowing through it. Upon application of a positive gate potential, the thyristor becomes "ON" and a current is enabled to flow from the anode to the cathode. The device can be deactivated by removing the gate potential. The S8010L thyristor will then continue to remain on until the current falls below the holding current.
Once the thyristor has switched on, the gate remains in the "on" state until the current reaches a certain level. The S8010L thyristor can be used to control the current in an inductive load, such as a motor or transformer, regardless of the polarity of the supply voltage. This is because the thyristor switches off when the current reaches a certain level and the inductive load continues to circulate its current even when the supply voltage changes.
The S8010L is ideal for controlling large amounts of power. It can regulate large AC and DC currents, can be used for long-term operation, and does not suffer from wear and tear like relays. The S8010L is a highly reliable, high power thyristor with long life and low conduction losses.
