S8020L

Thyristors - SCRs, or Silicon Controlled Rectifiers, are effectively high power switches. The S8020L is a fast-switching TO-220AC box package controlled silicon rectifier with a reverse transfer current of less than 800mA, making it suitable for power control and snubber applications. It is designed to stand up to high voltage spikes, which makes it suitable for many other applications as well.

The S8020L is a three-terminal device, with a gate, an anode and a cathode. It works off of the Thyristor principle, which allows it to be turned on or off with a single pulse of current or voltage. This allows for high frequencies of power for applications such as motor control, variable frequency supplies, and light dimmers.

In its turn-off state, the thyristor acts as an open circuit between the anode and the cathode, so no current can flow. When the gate of the thyristor is raised to a high enough voltage, the thyristor turns on, allowing current to flow between the anode and the cathode. When the gate voltage is released, the thyristor will remain in its on state until the current through it drops to a certain level, called the "holding current". It will then turn off, cutting the current automatically and safely.

Because the S8020L has a high reverse transfer current, it is suitable for high-voltage applications such as motor control, power supplies and light dimming. When the thyristor is used for motor control, the gate can be used to turn on and off the motor in a regular pattern, allowing for precise speed and torque control. In lighting applications, the thyristor can be used to dim fluorescent and incandescent lighting.
