The S8025NTP is designed to be triggered by voltage. More precisely, when a voltage pulse is applied to the Gate terminal of an SCR, current is briefly allowed to flow before the main current can reach the load. This main current can then enter the long terminal of the SCR, as long as the right polarity of the voltage is at the other side of the SCR. This situation can be maintained until the main current is purposely stopped by the use of another switching component, such as a mechanical switch. This is because the current will remain on in the load even if the voltage applied to the Gate has been completely cut off during the commutation process.The S8025NTP can also be used in commutated circuits in which the load current is removed from the SCR after it has been triggered, such as in dimming controllers for lighting fixtures and many other speed control applications.Since the flow of current is restricted to one direction, the S8025NTP is also suited for applications where protection against surges or overloads is required.
