Charge carriers begin to flow from the cathode to anode and the diode becomes conductive for a short interval. The transition to this conductive state is very fast and the current through the diode is limited by its small area.

The behavior of the TVS diode is dependent on various design parameters. These include, but are not limited to, breakdown voltage, leakage current, pulse duration of the surge, and power dissipation. Depending on the needs, these parameters can be varied to affect the performance of the device. Additionally, multiple TVS diodes can be used in series or parallel to increase the power dissipation and to provide over-voltage protection with lower breakdown voltage.

It is important to note that TVS diodes are designed to limit transients and over-voltage conditions, but they are not intended to replace or supplement fuses for overload protection.
