The SA130C belongs to the TVS - Diodes family, which are a type of semiconductor device used for providing protection from voltage transients resulting from electrostatic discharge (ESD) or lightning induced surges. This subfamily of Transient Voltage Suppression devices is a cost-effective solution for protecting electronic equipment from voltage transients and other related transient voltage protection requirements.
The SA130C is a unique silicon diode designed for high protection against short-term overvoltages. It features an epitaxial planar construction and is available in a Static Halogen-Free DPAK package. It is designed to protect sensitive electronic equipment from the damaging effects of transient overvoltages caused by lightning, electrostatic discharge (ESD), and electric/electronic pulses.
The SA130C shows excellent performance characteristics and is capable of safely dissipating up to 400A (8/20 μs waveforms, 10KV peak amplitude) and up to 800A (8/20 μs waveforms, 6KV peak amplitude), with energy handling capability of up to 900J. The device has an avalanche breakdown voltage of 5.8V and a maximum reverse stand-off voltage of 7.0V, making it ideal for protecting low voltage components. The SA130C has a peak pulse power of up to 1.6kW and is also equipped with low capacitance for minimal pulse distortion.
The SA130C is employed in applications that require reliable protection against transient overvoltages, such as in electrostatic discharge (ESD) sensitivity and in devices that are exposed to high-energy pulses. It can be used in power supplies, communication equipment, consumer electronics, automotive electronics, and similar applications. It is also suitable for low-voltage protection, which can be achieved with an alternative lead configuration.
The SA130C works on the principle of avalanche breakdown, where a diode is operated in a reverse bias condition, allowing electrons to overcome the electric field and create electric undercurrent. When the electric field reaches to a certain high intensity, the electrons become thermally activated to breach the barrier and create more electrons. The electrons proceed in an avalanche and result in a large current flowing through the diode. This mechanism is known as the avalanche effect and it is used to protect electronic components from transient overvoltages.
The robust construction of the SA130C makes it suitable for high-volume production and guarantees reliable operation. It is easy to integrate and can be adapted for different applications and systems.
