SA17 are TVS – Diodes (Transient Voltage Suppressor Diodes). The regulator is used to protect sensitive and valuable electrical equipments from voltage transients, such as those generated by switching regulators, relay contact noise, DC/DC converters and other such noise on the power line. There are a variety of designs and types, all of which share the same basic principle of protecting sensitive electronic components from high voltage transients.

SA17 works as a one way circuit. The TVS diode will conduct current in forward direction under normal operating conditions.
