TVS diodes are often used to provide transient voltage protection for sensitive electronics, such as in various portable consumer electronics, automotive systems and medical equipment. The SA48C is a T non-linear suppressor (TVS) diode, which offers surge current capability from 25A at 8/20 μs and 1mA at 100ns. This diode is designed for both power protection applications and signal line protection, and is built with Planar diode structure.
Application Fields
SA48C TVS diodes are designed for signal and power line protection in such applications as portable electronic devices, automotive systems, and medical equipment. The SA48C is an excellent choice for protecting against transients that may damage or disrupt connected components. Its compact size and low clamping voltage make it an ideal choice for those applications where space is at a premium.
SA48C TVS diodes are also ideal for protecting input/output lines on various consumer electronics, such as game consoles, home theater systems, cellular phones, digital cameras, and PDAs. The SA48C is also great for protecting automotive electronics, including alternators, ECU’s, throttle bodies, and various safety systems.
This type of diode can be used effectively in medical applications, where its small size and low clamping voltage make it ideal for protecting sensitive equipment such as pacemakers, defibrillators, and other medical monitoring devices. Additionally, SA48C TVS diodes are also excellent for protecting signal lines and power lines on sensitive instrumentation, such as laboratory equipment and field services.
Working Principle
The working principle of the SA48C is based on the fundamental semiconductor diode behavior of conducting a current when forward-biased and blocking voltages when reverse-biased. The diode is designed to allow a very high flow of current in one direction (forward direction) to protect an electronic circuit and yet block excessive voltages in the other direction (reverse direction). When a voltage exceeding the diode\'s breakdown voltage is applied to the device, the diode will quickly and safely clamp the voltage to a level that will not cause any permanent damage to the electronic circuit.
When a transient voltage surge is applied to the diode, the diode briefly conducts the current by allowing the current to flow through the diode\'s p-n junction. This, in turn, results in a very sharp increase in voltage across the diode\'s terminals which instantly clamps the voltage to the diode\'s breakdown voltage. This significantly lowers the voltage applied to the protected circuit and acts as a short-lived overload protection device.
SA48C TVS diodes are constructed using planar diode structures and built with very precise specs, so they are able to provide reliable protection against transient voltage surges. With its low clamping voltage and 25A surge current capability, the SA48C is one of the most reliable and efficient TVS devices available.
