The working principle of SA56-11EWA is based on a 2-dimensional matrix row and column output. The chip consists of 5 lines connected to 16 slices of LEDs. Each of the LEDs has a driving register embedded in the chip. To display the desired data, simply select the appropriate register. The data is loaded at the inputs of the registers, which control the transistors to enable the corresponding LEDs.
