TVS diodes are used to protect electrical circuits from transient voltage events such as lightning, electrostatic discharge (ESD) and electrical insulation deficiencies. These high-amplitude, often high-energy voltages can damage sensitive components, which may lead to system malfunctions and costly repairs or replacements. SA7.5A is a later extrusion TVS (Transient Voltage Suppression) diode predominantly designed for protection of data lines. It is robust, surface mountable, and fast breakdown time. The working principle and application field of SA7.5A are introduced below.

SA7.5A is a 600W with unidirectional and bidirectional transient voltage suppressor (TVS) featuring low leakage current. It has a high surge capability up to +13kA (8/20 micro-seconds) and lower clamping voltage. It is designed to provide maximum ESD and surge protection as required by IEC 61000-4-2 (air-gap discharge) and IEC 61000-4-5 (combined surge), and related standard tests. It can also hold multiple board placing and dissipate very strong energy flashes.

SA7.5A working principle is mainly based on the avalanche breakdown of zinc oxide. Zinc oxide is a semiconductor material with low reverse breakdown voltage, which has a property known as the avalanche effect. When the voltage across the diode surpasses a certain value, a large amount of electrons are accelerated to a high velocity in the semiconductor material, resulting in the generation of free electrons, each of which can strike atoms in the material and further release more electrons, resulting in a rapid increase in the number of carriers. This avalanche effect makes the diode able to pass a large amount of current, i.e. the current through the diode skyrockets from microamps to several amperes at a very high rate and voltage across the diode decreases from the applied voltage to several volts rapidly. This effectively clamps the voltage within a couple of nanoseconds, limiting the current and protecting the circuit.

The typical applications of SA7.5A include consumer electronics, digital peripherals, wireline communication and servers. SA7.5A can provide reliable protection for consumer electronics that require ESD immunity testing. Its low capacitance, low leakage current, and low working frequency are perfect protections for digital peripherals, such as line-cards.
