TVS - Diodes: SA7.5AHA0G Application Field and Working Principle

Transient voltage suppressors (TVS) are semiconductor devices capable of protecting against electrical transients such as lightning and electrostatic discharge (ESD). They work by diverting the high-energy surge current to ground, thus preventing it from reaching the protected circuit. TVS diodes are available in different forms, such as Zener, avalanche, and bidirectional configurations. One such most widely used occurrence is the SA7.5AHA0G TVS diode.

SA7.5AHA0G TVS Diode: The SA7.5AHA0G TVS diode is manufactured by using unidirectional avalanche architecture to absorb a variety of high-speed surge currents without sustaining permanent damage. A unidirectional diode design has two distinct advantages: (1) protection for both polarities, and (2) lower peak voltage stress for the same peak current handling capability compared to bidirectional and unidirectional designs. The SA7.5AHA0G TVS diode is a robust device withstanding surge voltages up to 7.5A and is capable of dissipating 450W, while still maintaining a high level of immunity performance over temperature and life. It can also easily become non–linear with rated avalanche current (100A) and withstand surge currents of 200A for less than 1ms.

Working Principle: The working principle of the SA7.5AHA0G TVS diode can be easily understood when it is understood that it always follows the exponential behavior. This behavior of the diode can be explained in a graphical fashion. As shown in figure 1, the voltage-current relationship of SA7.5AHA0G TVS-diode follows the principle -

  • The diode starts to conduct current at a certain voltage, depending on manufacturing technology, which is usually referred to as its “On Voltage”.
  • When the diode is triggered, the current exponentially increases – that is, the current increases at a rate proportional to the current.
  • After exceeding the peak current rating of the diode, the current drops back to nearly zero (or near the On Voltage).

Once the diode has reached the peak current rating, the device starts to dissipate energy in the form of heat, slowing down the rate at which the current increases and eventually stops.

Application Field: The SA7.5AHA0G TVS diode is used in various applications, such as power supplies, medical equipment, consumer electronics, and automotive electronics. This diode is used to protect sensitive circuits from transients caused by lightning or ESD. Its robustness and low reverse capacitance make it a great choice for protecting power supplies from voltage spikes.
