The SA75CA is a Transient Voltage Suppressor (TVS) diode used in industrial and automotive applications to regulate and protect against transient voltage spikes. The diode works by allowing only a certain amount of over voltage to pass through the circuit while clamping any excessive voltage that may cause damage to the application’s electronic components. The SA75CA is a three-terminal diode and can be configured for both unidirectional and bidirectional protection. This versatility makes it suitable for many applications such as Automotive Battery Stabilizers, Surge Protectors, and Voltage Regulators.
The SA75CA TVS diode consists of a semiconductor junction within an encapsulated body, of which two terminals provide the electrical connection between the application and the TVS diode and also provide the clamping operation. The third terminal is just an anchoring point to connect the circuit to ground. The maximum voltage, which the device can handle, is known as the Peak Pulse Power Dissipation, or PPP.
The device also has a breakdown voltage that determines the voltage when the diode starts to conduct. This breakdown voltage is selected according to the application and it allows some of the voltage to be conducted across the diode during normal operation. In the case of transient over-voltage protection, the voltage reaches the breakdown voltage or higher, and the device will start to conduct, preventing any further voltage from reaching the application.
