TVS - Diodes: SA75CAHA0G application field and working principle

TVS (Transient Voltage Suppressor) diodes are used to protect a device or system from transient voltage or current spikes that may occur due to electrostatic and inductive loads. It will help device from high voltage or current spikes and protect the device from damages. A TVS Diode should not be connected to the circuit permanently instead in application of transient voltage protection, it should be connected only when transient voltage protection is needed as it dissipates energy and reduces the energy efficiency of the device or system.

SA75CAHA0G is one of such TVS diodes which can provide transient voltage protection needed in modern circuit designs. The units of SA75CAHA0G are manufactured using an exclusive patent pending Multi-Path Junction design to extend its temperature range, reduce SCL leakage and increase the peak current and energy performance. It consists of two symmetrical thyristors electrically connected in the reverse Avalanche breakdown mode.

The application field of SA75CAHA0G includes industries like automotive, aerospace & defence, consumer electronics, industrial applications, medical and telecom/datacom. The main features of SA75CAHA0G TVS diode include low clamping voltage and fast response time. It can accommodate withstanding voltage of peak pulse power up to 400W.

The working principle of SA75CAHA0G is based on the bi-directional 2 terminal junction type. It gives the user a more reliable and robust design. The device remains off until its breakdown voltage is reached. It is because the device has to be triggered by a voltage to start avalanche breakdown process. The trigger voltage should be greater that the breakdown voltage Vbr for the given device. Once device is triggered then a very low effective resistance is observed in the forward bias mode and a large current flow is started. This large current flow changes the voltage across the device to the clamping voltage.

In order to ensure fast response, the process of triggering, avalanche breakdown and clamping should happen in very short time. To achieve this, SA75CAHA0G has an ultra-low capacitance of 0.1pf. This ensures fast response time and overvoltage protection up to 800 W peak pulse power at 8/20μs.
