TVS or Transient Voltage Suppression Diodes, are a semiconductor device that has a primary purpose of protecting an electrical circuit from a voltage transient. A voltage transient is the sudden increase or decrease in voltage over a short period of time. In order to protect against voltage transients, a TVS diode must have a high breakdown voltage to absorb excessive voltage.

The SA78-E3/54 is a TVS diode that is designed to protect against voltage transients in automotive and aviation applications. The device offers 8V of reverse breakdown protection, with a maximum peak pulse current of 400A.
