An SA78 TVS (transient voltage suppressor) diode is an electronic device used primarily to protect other components from voltage surges. It is designed to limit the voltage spike caused in a circuit by a surge device – such a lightning strike or a switching power supply. The SA78 is composed of a diode, capacitors, and resistors, and can be configured in a variety of ways depending on the voltage and current requirements of the device being protected.
The basic structure of an SA78 diode consists of two silicon diodes which share a common electrode. The two diodes are connected in an "anti-parallel" configuration, meaning that they are connected in opposite directions, with the cathodes of each diode connected together.
