TVS - Diodes
TVS (Transient Voltage Suppressor) diodes are unidirectional voltage-clamping devices used in a variety of electronic circuits. These diodes are designed to protect sensitive electronic components from voltage spikes or transient voltage. TVS diodes can also be used to protect critical systems from overvoltage or to limit peak current in inductive loads.
The typical structure of TVS diodes consists of a PN junction. When a voltage spike occurs, the PN junction will be forward-biased and begin to conduct current. This forward-biasing will cause the PN junction to act like a zener diode, meaning that the voltage across the diode will be clamped at a value which is determined by the construction of the diode. The voltage clamping of TVS diodes is typically much faster than other overvoltage protection devices. This makes them the ideal choice for applications that require fast response times and high power protection.
TVS diodes are available in a variety of package styles and voltage ratings. The most common types of package styles are SOT (Small Outline Transistor), DO-41 (D-Pak Outline) and SMB (Surface Mount Box). The most common voltage ratings for TVS diodes range from 5 - 1500 volts. For higher voltage applications, TVS devices are available in packaging which can withstand up to 5000 volts.
TVS diodes are typically used in applications where sensitive components must be protected from transients or overvoltage. In automotive applications, TVS diodes are often used in ignition coils and EMC filters to protect ignition systems and electronic control units from voltage transients. In industrial applications, TVS diodes are used to protect control systems, circuit breakers, and motor controllers from overvoltage or surges. Because of their fast response times, TVS diodes are also becoming increasingly popular in the communications and consumer electronics industries.
The proper selection of a TVS diode for an application is vital for successful operation. It is important to consider the overvoltage rating, power dissipation rating, and reverse stand-off voltage of the diode. The overvoltage rating of a TVS diode is the maximum peak voltage that the device can withstand, while the reverse stand-off voltage is the maximum reverse voltage that the device can handle. The power dissipation rating is the maximum power the device can handle without becoming damaged or destroyed.
TVS diodes are a reliable and cost-effective means of providing overvoltage or transient protection for electronic systems. With their fast response times and broad voltage ratings, TVS diodes are an ideal choice for applications requiring fast response times and high power protection. By selecting the appropriate TVS diode for their particular application, engineers can ensure that their systems are properly protected from overvoltage and transient conditions.
