The SG117AT is a type of linear, low dropout voltage regulator developed by STMicroelectronics. It is mainly used in applications such as portable electronics, digital cameras, and industrial electronics. This regulator features an output voltage up to 7.5V, and a maximum output current rating of 10A.
The SG117AT supports input voltages from 6V to 18V, and offers a guaranteed maximum dropout voltage of 100mV. It also has an adjustable output voltage range from 1.25V to 7.5V and operating temperature range from -40°C to +125°C. The SG117AT comes in two package options, an 8-pin DIL (dual in-line) or an 8-pin DDPAK (surface mount).
The circuit block diagram of the SG117AT can be seen below. The voltage regulator is composed of a pass transistor, and a power BJT (bipolar junction transistor) which is used as the pass transistor’s control element. In turn, the control element is connected to an error amplifier, which is responsible for adjusting the output voltage of the linear regulator. The error amplifier is connected to feedback resistors which set the negative feedback loop of the regulator.
The circuit works as follows: when the input voltage (VIN) is greater than the output voltage (VOUT), a current flows from the input pin to ground. This current is measured by the current sensing resistor, and is amplified by the error amplifier. The error amplifier then passes this amplified current to the base of the control BJT which is connected to the pass transistor. The pass transistor then controls the current output of the regulator.
The reference voltage for the voltage regulation is generated by a divider ratio created by the R1 and R2 resistors, which is compared to an internal reference voltage. This reference voltage can be adjusted by changing the R1 and R2 resistors and the voltage accuracy of the regulator can be improved by using an external resistor and capacitor.
The SG117AT features an over-current protection circuit which ensures stable operation in the case of an overload. This is achieved by sensing the pass transistor’s collector current using the current sensing resistor. If this current exceeds the predetermined limit, the over-current protection circuit will respond and the pass transistor will be turned off.
The SG117AT provides excellent performance with low quiescent current and high power supply rejection. It also offers fast output voltage regulation and an adjustable output voltage range. These features make the SG117AT ideal for use in a wide range of applications, including portable electronics, digital cameras, and industrial electronics.
